Pakistan Has Potential to Reduce Electricity Costs by Up to Rs 12 Per Unit, Says Owais Leghari

Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has announced ambitious plans to reduce electricity prices in Pakistan. The goal is to bring the cost down to Rs 10 per unit, which would provide significant relief to consumers.

Currently, electricity prices vary depending on the category of consumer and their usage. For instance, domestic consumers using up to 50 units of electricity per month pay Rs 3.95 per unit, while those using between 101-200 units pay Rs 14.16 per unit ยน. Commercial and industrial consumers also face different tariff rates.

Leghari’s announcement comes as the government is working to resolve issues with captive power plants, which are expected to be settled by the end of the month. Additionally, the government plans to review 24 bagasse plants to determine the return on equity for government plants.

It’s worth noting that electricity prices have already decreased by Rs 4 for domestic consumers. This move is part of the government’s efforts to improve the power sector, which has shown significant improvement in electricity prices since June 2024.

Overall, the proposed reduction in electricity prices is a welcome development for Pakistani consumers, who have been facing high energy costs in recent years.
